Finding the right piece of media at just the right time can help you to feel less alone in the world. Whether it’s a book, a TV show, or a podcast, hearing relatable stories from others can be a really positive way of helping yourself understand your own feelings.

Here are six fantastic graphic novels that deal with grief and loss.

Mazebook by Jeff Lemire

This story follows a father who has lost his daughter and has lost his way. What appears initially to be a quest to find his daughter, turns out to be a quest to find his own way in the world without her.

It's quiet and contemplative, leaving you with plenty to think about when you've finished reading.

Adrift on a Painted Sea by Tim Bird

Sue Bird was an artist who wasn't interested in exhibiting or selling her work, she just painted because she loved it.

When she passed away, her son, Tim, decided to pay tribute to his mother by creating this book, weaving her paintings amongst his illustrations, telling an intimate story of their family.

More than anything, Tim has created a beautiful lasting legacy for his mum, and I feel privileged that he's shared such a personal story with us.

Better Place by Duane Murray & Shawn Daley

This is such a charming and emotional read, with gorgeous art and endearing characters.

Dylan’s best friend is his grandad, and together they imagine themselves saving the universe through play as Red Rocket and Kid Cosmo. When his grandad dies, Dylan goes on a quest to find the ‘better place’ that he’s been told his grandfather has gone to.

Ditching Saskia by John Moore & Neetols

Damian misses his mother, but he can finally afford a Spirit Flower to summon her ghost and spend some time with her. However, Damien accidentally summons the wrong ghost, and this one's an annoying little kid that he can't seem to get rid of.

This one is less about grief directly and more about self-discovery, but it’s an all ages book that puts a fantastical twist on real emotions.

The Last Lonely Saturday by Jordan Crane

This is an almost completely wordless comic about an old man struggling with the grief of losing his wife. It has a bit of a surprise ending which I wasn't expecting, but it makes for a tragically sweet story, perfect for those who love a bit of melancholy.

Glass Half Empty by Rachael Smith

This auto-bio comic tells the tale of Rachael's relationship with both her dad and with alcohol, and how the two are entwined, even after his death

It also focuses heavily on Rachael's mental health, and it does it all with her usual humour and heart.
