Every year on 24th July, Samaritans hold their annual Awareness Day, reminding everyone that support is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. For those who are bereaved, grieving, or facing difficult times, knowing that a caring ear is always there can be a vital comfort. At funeral-notices.co.uk, we want to help raise awareness of this important day and the incredible work Samaritans do for people across the UK and Ireland.

What is Samaritans Awareness Day?

Samaritans Awareness Day, marked on 24th July or 24/7, highlights the charity’s round-the-clock helpline and support services. Throughout July, local branches host events and activities to spread the message that no one has to face tough moments alone. Whether you’re struggling with loss, feeling isolated, or simply need someone to talk to, Samaritans are always ready to listen without judgement.

The charity responds to a call for help every ten seconds. Their volunteers offer confidential emotional support by phone, email, letter, or face-to-face at local branches. You don’t need to be in crisis to contact them; anyone who needs a listening ear is welcome.

How Can You Get Involved?

There are many ways individuals and organisations can support Samaritans Awareness Day and help spread hope:
  • Take On a Challenge: Some supporters choose to participate in a 24-hour challenge during July such as walking, reading, or fundraising events to raise awareness and funds.
  • Share the Message: Raise awareness on social media by sharing Samaritans’ downloadable campaign assets with the hashtag #SamaritansAwarenessDay.
  • Support in the Workplace: Workplaces can join in by highlighting Samaritans’ work among colleagues and organising fundraising activities or awareness events.
By getting involved, you help ensure that more people know about Samaritans’ free helpline (116 123) and the many ways to reach out for support.

Reaching Out for Support

If you or someone you know is struggling to cope, whether due to bereavement or any other life challenge, remember that help is always available. You can:
  • Call Samaritans for free: 116 123 (available 24/7)
  • Write a letter: Freepost SAMARITANS LETTERS
  • Visit a local branch for face-to-face support
Samaritans also offer resources in Welsh and provide guidance for workplaces looking to support staff wellbeing.

You Are Not Alone

Grief and hardship can feel overwhelming at times. On Samaritans Awareness Day and every day, it’s important to know you don’t have to carry your burdens alone. By spreading awareness and supporting each other, we can make sure no one faces their darkest moments without a compassionate listener by their side.
