When you lose a loved one, it can be a challenge to find their obituary, especially if they lived in a different area or country. This guide will help you navigate the process of finding an obituary for a specific person in the UK, including resources like funeral-notices.co.uk.

Understanding Obituaries

An obituary is a notice of someone's death, typically published in a newspaper or online platform such as this. It usually includes details about the person's life, surviving family members, and information about funeral or memorial services. If you ever find yourself in the sad position of having to write an obituary, we've put together some tips that might help here.

Starting Your Search: Basic Tips

Start your search with as much information as you have: the person's full name, approximate date of death, date of birth, and location can be helpful. Remember that obituaries are often published in local newspapers where the person lived or died. Begin with a basic search online of their name and see if anything comes up.

Utilising Online Resources

The internet has made it easier than ever to find obituaries. Here are some resources you might find useful:

Funeral-notices.co.uk
Funeral Notices is a comprehensive resource for finding obituaries in the UK. You can search by name, location, or date of death. The site also includes funeral and memorial service details when available.

Local Newspaper Websites
Many newspapers offer online archives of their obituaries. Check the websites of newspapers in the area where the person lived or died.

Libraries and Historical Societies/Family Tree Sites
Public libraries and historical societies often maintain archives of local newspapers, which can include obituaries. Contact them to see if they can assist with your search. There are many family history sites available now, too, and they're always worth checking as they often carry copies of death certificates. GOV.UK can help with this too, or point you in the direction of a local library. Take a look at their website here.

Contacting Funeral Directors

If you know which funeral home handled the services, they may have copies of the obituary or be able to direct you to where it was published. Most funeral directors have websites, and many publish obituaries on them for many of the funerals they undertake. Funeral directors and arrangers are friendly and helpful, and will help if they can.

Finding an obituary for a specific person in the UK can be a challenge, but with patience and the right resources, it's certainly achievable. Remember to utilise online resources like funeral-notices.co.uk, local newspapers, and libraries. Your efforts will help you find the information you need to honour your loved one's memory.

I'm looking for my Great Grandfather Joshua Beecroft's grave. He died in June 1926 in Stow,Lincolnshire according to Ancestry. He disappeared out of his child's(my Grandmother Doris Hilda Beecroft) & wife's life(Harriet Beecroft(Nee Stammers) sometime after his daughter was born in 1915.She wasn't told anything about him & doesn't remember him ever being part of her life;so she assumed he was killed in WW1,but he wasn't. Any info or a pic of his grave would be wonderful. Thank you.
