Mr Van Tromp welcomed me to Willy Eds in 1985, when I was a young, naive teacher. He helped me secure my home as I only had a temporary housing contract and if I'd lost my home, I would've had to leave my job.

He was kind to everyone- students and staff- and he was interested in everyone. He would always ask me 'How was Limavady?', my home town in Northern Ireland, after the holidays. He was like a father figure to many of us at that school and everything changed for the worse after he left.

I am so sorry for your loss.

With deepest sympathy,
Liz Johnston

I worked with Roy at Galleywood Parish Council as his Planning committee Clerk. Always the voice of wisdom, kindness and fair generosity of heart. A true friend and complete gentleman. Greatly missed in the Parish and so very sad to hear of Roy’s passing before I got the chance to say a true goodbye…

Roy was a great friend to our family. My Wife Liz and I arrived as newly qualified teachers from N.Ireland in 1985. We both worked under him in William Edward's School in Grays, Essex where he was the Headteacher. He arranged accommodation for us and supported our application to stay in Purfleet. I miss the many varied conversations and social activities that we engaged in. A true gentleman and community spirited leader. R.I.P. Peter Johnston.
