This is a brief history of a business that was initially established by Issac Hodgson in the early 1920s. The business was located in Market Place Cockermouth, situated behind J B Banks Ironmongers. Upon Issac Hodgson's death, the business was handed over to Nelson Chicken Snr, who had been working with Hodgson for his entire professional life.
Unfortunately, Nelson Chicken Snr fell ill, which led to the business being taken over by Nelson Chicken Jr in 1980. During this transition period, he was aided by his mother, Dorothy. They also opened a chapel of rest in a repurposed property located within the grounds of their residence at 39 Kirkgate.
Currently, the business is managed from Kirkgate by a team of dedicated part-time workers, that has been instrumental in maintaining the smooth operation of the business.
