Mary and I corresponded for several years after my mum, Winnie, passed away in 2015. (Mum always called Mary by her school nickname of “Mac”, and it was years before I knew Mac’s real name!) I recently remembered a story that Mum once told me about Mary and that she would probably have liked me to pass on to you. In the late 1950s, Mum was planning to emigrate from England to marry our dad, who had already moved to Canada for work. However, she was so upset about leaving her family that she didn’t want them coming to the airport with her to say goodbye. So, Mary went with her instead for moral support. Mum told me that, if it hadn’t been for Mary’s support, she might never have got on that plane, in which case, my siblings and I would never have been born! So, in fact, Mary has an international legacy! Our mums were part of a truly inspiring generation, and I hope that the two of them continue to share warm conversations over nice cups of tea. With sincerest condolences and warmest wishes to your family.

Mary was a great lady I had the pleasure to know for 45 years spent many a day drinking tea and putting the world to rights.
She will be sadly missed by all that knew her
