MurielWARDof Braichmelyn, Bethesda passed away peacefully on Monday 14th July 2025, aged 84 years.

Widow of the former headteacher of Glasbury Primary School, the late David C. Ward, Mary is survived by Cat, her oldest child, and grandchildren Xanthe, Robin and Charlie, in the UK, daughter Helen and grandchildren Azusa and Hanna in Japan, and her youngest daughter Justine and grandchildren Keeley, Magali and Ellesha in Australia. She had been looking forward to meeting her two great-grandchildren, Oliver and Leona, for the first time.

For many years Mary was a familiar and friendly face behind the counter at Royston Photographic in Bangor and later at the Debenhams department store in town. Her passion for the written word led her to becoming a founding member of the Bangor Cellar Writing Group, which was open to anyone in the area who wished to hone their creative writing skills. Mary was a woman of words who brought people together.

Much loved, Mary is remembered with great affection by her family and friends, including her kind and supportive neighbours. Having lived a full life, she can finally rest in peace and be reunited with Deiniol, her greatly missed son.

A funeral service will take place on Thursday 28th August 2025, at 1.30pm, at Bangor Crematorium, followed by a reception at Gwesty Carreg Bran, Llanfair PG, Anglesey, LL61 5YH. Anyone who knew Mary and would like to pay their respects is welcome to attend.

Although there is no requirement for formal funeral attire, those who would prefer to wear traditional dark clothing are welcome to do so, ideally with accessories in any of Mary's favourite colours of purple, mauve and pink, or alternatively wear items with a floral design to reflect her love of the roses and other flowers in her front garden, where she would sit and read on warm and sunny days.

Donations in Mary's memory, in lieu of flowers, can be made to Book Aid, one of a dozen or more charities that she regularly supported. These can be made on the day, or via a weblink. If necessary, please contact H O Davies Funeral Directors, 4 High Street, Bangor . 01248 362650.

Mary was a dear and special friend for close to 20 years. We met when I was in need of a friend having lost my partner... and I needed a way to kick start my writing career. Mary became that special friend, my go-to writing friend, mentor and so much more.

She nurtured my first attempts to write, while listening to me moan about the day job. She introduced me to the writing group and she gently nudged me to run it within a few months. I attended my first writing conference with her (in Winchester) and we planned to do another one next year to celebrate being friends 20 years. So sad that won't happen now.

She also introduced me to Paperwings Book club. We became great friends. As I started to win writing awards, find an agent and a publisher, she was the first person I called! So we commiserated the failures and celebrated the successes. When I was moving away she was so sad but we made an agreement to speak regularly and have done these past 10 years. It used to be fortnightly phone calls but when lockdown happened it turned into weekly Zooms, 1.15 every Monday. She always shared her family news and was so proud of all of her children. And then we'd talk books and writing.

I am so truly honoured to have called her my friend and she is the only person who I was able to share so much of my writing with and my ideas. We bounced off each other. Anything she saw in a magazine or a book she thought I would like or would help me, would arrive in a little surprise parcel. I will miss that.

Now Mondays feel sad as she isn't at the other end of the computer with her smiley face, putting the world to rights.

I can't believe how many times a day I think "I must tell Mary that" or "Mary would love that "

There is a hole in my life now and I think I will just have to tell her these things anyway.

Love you and miss you, Mary, and I hope you were right that one day I will get the big break with my writing. And you will still be the first person I tell... miss you x Debz

I only met Mary a few weeks before she sadly died. We were looking forward to doing a little job for her at her house. Mary was very friendly with lots to say about everything.
Thinking of all the family at this sad time.
Roy Bangor.
