Michael A. L.STATEIn memory of Mike State, our much-loved dad and grandad, born in London but latterly of Rustington, W. Sussex, who has died in Worthing Hospital at the age of 82. A devout Catholic who also loved his family, trains, ships, photography and dogs, Mike was widely known for his kindness and dedication during his long career in local banking, and in his retirement working for charities and the Historic Churches Committee. We greatly miss his twinkly smile and gentle humour. Funeral at St Joseph's, Rustington, on 5th August 2022 at 11am. No flowers, please.

A True Gentleman of Banking

To work with someone across multiple branches and years is a rare privilege. For those of us who shared an office with Mike State—from Maidstone KBO in 1977, to 117 High Street Gillingham in 1979, and back to Maidstone in 1981—the experience was defined by his steady presence and remarkable character.

The Measure of the Man
Mike was the personification of what it meant to be a "good banker." In an era of significant change within the industry, he balanced technical proficiency with a unique, old-school charm.

The Signature Aroma: Many will remember Mike best with his pipe in hand, the distinct and sophisticated scent of Sobranie tobacco trailing through the air. It was a hallmark of his calm, composed personality.

A True Gentleman: He carried himself with a quiet dignity and kindness.

A Consummate Professional: His integrity was the backbone of his work. He was a man of his word, representing the very best of the banking profession.

A Lasting Legacy
Beyond the daily routines of the High Street branches, Mike made the workplace better simply by being in it. He was a mentor by example and a friend by nature—a man whom it was a genuine pleasure to work alongside.
