For those of us who shared an office with Mike State—from Maidstone KBO in 1977, to 117 High Street Gillingham in 1979, and back to Maidstone in 1981—the experience was defined by his steady presence and remarkable character.

Mike was the personification of what it meant to be a "good banker." In an era of significant change within the industry, he balanced technical proficiency with a unique, old-school charm.

The Signature Aroma: Many will remember Mike best with his pipe in hand, the distinct and sophisticated scent of Sobranie tobacco trailing through the air. It was a hallmark of his calm, composed personality.
