Charles Frederick V.SPECKMAN21.04.1897 - 30.09.1917 In memory of Private Vincent Speckman who served with the 1st/4th Battalion, East Yorkshire Regiment (regimental service number 200692). Second son of the late Charles and Rose Speckman (née Chadwick) and dear brother of the late Margaret Ann (02.12.1886-21.12.1912), Beatrice Magdalen (19.08.1888-27.10.1968), Henry David Chadwick (29.10.1890-19.02.1893 ), Louisa Maud (24.09.1892-25.01.1916), Gertrude (26.03.1895-15.04.1976), William Francis (09.01.1899-17.07.1970), Helena Gladys, Albert Bernard (02.01.1904-01.06.1958), Rose (24.08.1906-27.08.1906), Doris Irene (03.10.1907-24.01.1998) and Nora (30.03.1914-22.09.1993). Maternal Uncle of Mummy, the late Rita Girvan (née Speckman) (21.02.1930-20.07.2000). What we call the beginning is often the end And to make an end is to make a beginning. The end is where we start from. See, they depart, and we go with them. We are born with the dead: See, they return, and bring us with them. The moment of the rose and the moment of the yew-tree Are of equal duration. A people without history Is not redeemed from time, for history is a pattern Of timeless moments. So, while the light fails On a winter's afternoon, in a secluded chapel History is now and England. With the drawing of this Love and the voice of this Calling We shall not cease from exploration And the end of all our exploring Will be to arrive where we started And know the place for the first time. Irene Girvan
