Joseph WilliamSLATTERYof Wycollar Close, Accrington, passed away on Sunday, September 4, aged 96. Joseph was a butcher and worked in the trade for a short time before becoming a wagon driver for Hoyle and Deans Ltd of Accrington, where he worked for a number of years. He then moved to English Electric in Clayton-le-Moors where he trained and worked as a fitter for many years. His final job and from where he retired was with William Blythe Chemicals where he started at the bottom and over many years worked his way up to works manager. He spent most of his working life at this company. Joseph loved racing pigeons, as did his father before him. But his greatest passion in life was football. In his youth he played for Newcastle United, before joining Accrington Stanley in the days when they played in the Football League. Along with his family he loved caravan holidays in the Lake District. He was also an avid gardener and enjoyed many hours in his allotment. He was the much loved husband of the late Mary, devoted father of Pat, Denise, Kevin and Terry, grandad to Donna and David and great-grandad of Declan, Darcie, Ellie and Myla. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered. Joseph’s funeral will be held on Friday, September 16 at 11.40am at Accrington Crematorium Chapel and conducted by David Ireland.
