Dorothy MayPHILLIMORECommemorating a year since the passing of a lovely Mum, Grandma and 'GMa' Formerly of Hawthorn Street, Derby died peacefully at the age of 98 on Mother's Day - 30 March 2025 in Poole, Dorset. She is pre-deceased by her beloved husband David Edward Phillimore 'Dave' (married 1948-2012) and Siblings Hilda Wagstaff (nee Glew), Reginald and Gordon Glew. A loving Mother to Jane and Colin; proud Grandmother to Rosie Skellett and Joel Phillimore; proud Great 'Gma' to Jack and Isla Brand. Dorothy went to school at Amber Street Juniors and sang in the choir at the Queen's Hall. She kept home for the Glew family at 21 Hawthorn Street, then worked at the CWS Boot and Shoe factory, Victory Road, Sinfin; as a seamstress at Litchchurch Mills, Osmaston Road, and modelled at Jerome's photographers. Throughout the Second World War she went dancing at the Plaza and Rialto Ballrooms and met David at the Barley Mow pub in 1942. They married in 1948 at St. Mary's Church, Alverston, after David demobbed in 1947. Dorothy moved to Red Lion Road in Tolworth, Surrey where she brought up Jane and Colin, worked at Redifusion, Tolworth Hospital as a Telephonist and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food as a Clerical Assistant in Animal Health until retiring in 1986. Dorothy loved singing and was a member of St. George's Church choir in Tolworth. She was an expert seamstress, doll maker and toymaker. A regular contributor of social history stories to the Derby Past and Present and Derby of Yesteryear Facebook pages she often received over 100 reactions and comments to her reminiscing. Her numerous friends from Derby, Tolworth and Poole in Dorset will miss her company, impeccable taste in clothes and colour coordination, terribly. Dorothy's final resting place is next to her beloved Dave, in the shade, on the cricket boundary.
