Olga MaryMULDERRIGof Oldfield Road, Sheffield (formerly St Peter’s Avenue, Haslingden), died on Wednesday, September 4, aged 89.
A Haslingden woman, Olga trained as a teacher at Sedgley Park, Manchester, and worked for most of her career at Hyndburn Park Primary School. She was a member of St Mary’s RC Church, Haslingden, where she was a lay reader and member of the flower team. Her passion for the creative arts found expression in theatrical performances, both as a member of Haslingden Arts Club, where she met her husband, Desmond, and as a teacher of speech and drama. She gained a Diploma from the London Academy of Speech and Drama and, as an elocution teacher, nurtured the dramatic talents of countless people in the Rossendale area, as well as those of her pupils at Hyndburn Park school, a number of whom went on to successful acting careers.
Together with her husband, she produced Irish plays at the IDL to raise money for the Christmas Crib in Haslingden Memorial Gardens. Notable performances include Lady Macbeth, Olivia (Twelfth Night), Eliza Doolittle, Cinderella, and a delightfully eccentric rendition of Madam Arcarti (Blithe Spirit).
She leaves four children, Catherine, Bridget, Matthew and Jane, and a grandson Noah. Since 2018 she had lived in Sheffield with her daughter Jane, where her wit, charm and gentle spirit endeared her to neighbours and friends in the local area.
The funeral will take place on Monday, September 16 with Requiem Mass at St Mary’s RC Church, Haslingden at 10am followed by interment at Haslingden cemetery officiated by Fr John Broadly.
Donations are requested in memory of Olga for NSPCC c/o funeral directors
