JoanMATTHEWSIt is with a very heavy heart that I write to inform you of the passing on the 5th May 2025 of a truly remarkable woman, my mum Joan.

Affectionately known as 'Poppet', she was a truly inspirational person, so much so that she completed a Psychology Honours Degree in two years, brought up three children whilst working full time as a teacher and over the years has filled many people with the confidence and imagination to go on and do the amazing things they've accomplished. Mum suffered from vascular dementia, her lucidity and connection to the world became a different place to what it was.

I think of her wonderful and sometimes cheeky sense of humour that has certainly kept me on my toes. She filled the space with beautiful thoughts and moved everyone around her. When out on her travels, ex-students or someone she knew always stopped to wish her well.

Even so when I once asked what's on her mind, the reply was, "I'm thinking about placing little snack balls in my bird feeder so the birds don't run out of food and to put some flowers next to the fireplace, just to present a little beauty."

She leaves her beloved children Adrian, Bryan and Lana.

The funeral service will be held at St John the Baptist RC Church, Rochdale at 11:00am on Wednesday 21st May 2025 followed by Committal at Rochdale Crematorium. All are welcome.

Mum specifically requested that everyone should wear their normal clothes, no black ties but just be as colourful, as she was.

Fond memories of times spent with you Joan, when our children were young & going through St John's School & church. Remembering our drama group and all the laughs we had together with Sr Eileen and our families. Thinking about this brings up the happy times that we had, unfortunately, very different to today.
You were a vivacious, kind & intelligent lady, who we are proud to have known. I remember you in mass with your pale blue hat that matched your sparkling pale blue eyes perfectly. You were always decked out beautifully with style.
It's been a long time since we last conversed due to distance, but you will never be forgotten and will remain large in our minds at your passing. Divine love to you, R.I.P
Many condolences & love to you Adrian, Lana & Brian.
