Alan was my first line manager when I joined University of Liverpool Library in 2007. I couldn't have asked for a more supportive, knowledgeable and decent boss. He could be curmudgeonly, but always in a way that made him more endearing. His sense of humour and choice opinions made working with him so much fun. You were a terrific bloke, Alan.

Alan was a father to his son who he sadly lost many years ago. Alan worked for a number of years at the University of Liverpool Library looking after the collections in the many departmental and main libraries. Previous to working in the university he'd worked in engineering as a tool maker. Alan was Evertonian, enjoyed golf, Cricket and travelling, he especially loved his trips to Italy and learning the language, he would often try out the new words he had learnt and pair it with his best Italian accent. Alan was also a fan of music, most memorably he loved Bob Dylan. Alan's love of music would lead him to attend the Isle of White music festival in 1970. Alan also liked a pint of decent beer, frequenting the Crown on Lime street and the Dispensary off Renshaw street. , Alan was thoroughly decent man who always greeted you with a smile on his face and will be greatly missed by all that had the pleasure to meet him.
