I worked with Ian for many years at Northumbria University when he was head of the Physics Department. He was always kind, courteous, and generous and a delight to work with. Ian spoke of returning to Ireland after retirement - he had a holiday home in the Mourne Mountains. But decided to stay in Ponteland to be near family and his many close Ponteland Golf Club friends.
I remember meeting Ian at Waitrose in Ponteland, buying a bottle of Scotch. I thought," Bushmills would be more your style?" He said, "Someone had just scored a hole-in-one, and it was for him."

I last met Ian before Christmas at the annual Northumbria old boys and girls reunion for retired Physics and Engineering staff. He seemed in decent health, and his death seemd very sudden. Rest in Peace - Ian.
