Alice lived for many years in Blackpool but is a native of Salford. Her childhood years were lived in the old Whit Lane, Pendleton, where she was connected with St Sebastian's Church and as a young woman was a Cub Akela there. Through years of night school study she became a bookkeeper in Manchester with a large insurance firm, and also learned French and Italian and travelled widely in Europe. She moved to Blackpool after meeting and marrying Kevin Hardy.
