David GeorgeHAKESDied peacefully aged 82 on 2nd January 2026 with loving wife Patrica by his side. David was born in Hull in 1943 and trained as a teacher at Hull University before then going on to then teach at Bacon Garth, and for over 35 years at Anlaby Junior School.

In addition to his much respected teaching skills, David was a keen potter and painter his works including water colours and oils. Perhaps walking in his great, great grandfathers' footsteps (W.D Penny) who was a skilled maritime artist with works still today exhibited in the Ferens Art Gallery.

A skilled musician, David played in a band in his youth and was a spitting image for Buddy Holly. His favourite bands included the Shadows and Crickets and any guitar-based musicians. He taught many students to play guitar.

David was an also a keen sportsman and played and coached football for many years. In his later life he enjoyed spending time by the beach and took up kite flying, becoming one of only a handful of people who could fly 3 sports kites at the same time. He travelled to a number of locations in the UK and France to take part in kite displays and festivals.

In his youth David was a keen cyclist and competed on many cycle events in East Yorkshire. He also loved his moped and working on old cars, in particular his 1954 Ford Popular which he kept for many years. He loved life in East Yorkshire and completed many of the key walks across the peaks and North Yorkshire Moors.

He leaves loving and devoted wife Patricia, also a retired teacher, having been very happily married for some 58 years, and his 3 loving sons Julian (an architect), Martin (a doctor) and Anthony (a property lawyer). David was also Grandfather to 8 loving grandchildren and will also be much missed by his brother, Ian, and the wider family and many friends.

The funeral will take place at Haltemprice Crematorium on 23rd January 2026 at 1:30pm. Family flowers only please, and donations for Mantle Cell Lymphoma and Dementia charities.

Much loved and will be missed, but we will always find you in the sunshine.

Mr Hakes was my favorite teacher at Bacon Garth in the early 70's with very fond memories of us playing our guitars with him in the guitar club. He was a very inspirational teacher and I'm So sad to hear of his passing. It sounds as if he had many more happy years teaching and had a very full life. Sending condolences to his family

I was in Mr Hakes’ class at Bricknell School in 1967. He was a truly gifted and inspirational teacher. His lessons were full of fun. He will always be fondly remembered. Condolences to his family. RIP Sir.

David was an inspirational person - occasional teacher and field trip (Whitby) lead. Always remember his different way of teaching - playing his guitar, learning about his love of Buddy Holly, and question 'how many uses for a paperclip'. A really decent person who cared. His carved paper displays were a joy. Greatly missed.

Mr Hakes taught our daughter Jade at Anlaby, she's now 35 and just said he was the best teacher ever which undoubtedly he was! We cannot thank him enough for the confidence he gave her. He was worth his weight in gold. Rest peacefully from the Thorpe family

David taught both of our sons and they loved him and his teaching style. Me and my wife both served with him on the committee of Friends of Anlaby School (FAS) for several years. My role as chair meant I was often in school. Whenever I entered David's classroom, it always seemed like organised chaos, but with everyone learning in fun ways, and with David surrounded by children, fielding several questions at once.
I recall him getting many parents and children interested in kite flying. We bumped into him at an event at Beverley Racecourse, having just purchased a kite for our youngest son, Curtis. I was retiscent about giving it a go until I'd had time to study instructions etc. However, David had other ideas and encouraged/persuaded us to have a go there and then. It was difficult to refuse him so we learnt the basics from him and had lots of happy times with the kite thereafter - I still have it!
He was also a key figure in both sons developing an interest in music, particularly the guitar - one has gone on to make a good living from his music.
As a family, we have nothing but fond memories of David - a lovely man.

So sad to hear about the passing of Mr Hakes.

He was my teacher at Anlaby Junior School. I remember him very fondly.... a great and fun teacher. I recall him teaching guitar, encouraging me to write poetry and us all going to his Cowboys and Indians party. (I cried when I had to go up a year and no longer be taught by him).

Thinking of his family.
