DavidGREENHALGHMr David Walter Greenhalgh, of Westwood St, Accrington, died on Monday, November 15, aged 73 years. Whilst at Hyndburn Park School, David’s teacher Mr Whittaker, later famed as Bullseye’s Jim Bowen, encouraged him to see a careers adviser, who put him in touch with British Rail. In 1963, aged 15, David began working as an engine cleaner. In 1967 he took up a post as a full-time fireman at Blackburn Station. David finally achieved his dream of being a train driver, driving Virgin’s West Coast Trains until his retirement in 2008, and in the early 90s was asked to drive the royal train with the Queen on board on a journey from Preston to Carlisle. He later received a letter of thanks from Buckingham Palace. His greatest hobby/ pastime was trains and railways. He also loved crown green bowling and attended many foreign holidays with fellow crown green bowlers to Cyprus, Tunisia, Minorca, and Malta. David was a keen Accrington Stanley supporter, and also followed Burnley FC with interest. He also enjoyed listening to all types of music and watching TV, especially Doctor Who and documentary programmes. He also enjoyed taking part in quizzes. He leaves his much loved wife Diane, son Martin and granddaughter Lily, brother Alan, sisters Janet and Anne, sister-in-law Sallie, and brother-in-law Alan. He was also a dear uncle and good friend to all who knew him. The funeral will be held on Thursday, December 2, 10.20am at Accrington Crematorium, led by Debbie Phillips. Family flowers only please, donations if desired to Cancer Research UK c/o funeral director. Funeral director: Hyndburn Funeral Service, Accrington.
