Des was always good company, always interesting with a good knowledge of local history and of Devonport, he had a good memory of political events and of his own experiences. He was a good friend, he was good humoured, and his values were steadfastly rooted in the post war order and he will be very much missed. Geoff

I haven’t seen Des for years but I remember a lovely, kind man. We canvassed together back in Thatcher days and he once said: ‘ I could never vote Tory. I’d rather cut off my arm’ Love from Sue (Haines) now Orgill.

A lovely person with many a great story to tell. A very civilised human being. Kept my father out of trouble on Friday afternoons for years. You’ll be greatly missed, Des.
