Every second in Richard’s company was a delight. I so enjoyed our sandwich breaks on our cycling trips - we sat in beautiful places, and chatted about everything and anything - most of it inconsequential, of course.

I think about his warmth, his generosity, his kindness, his humour, his passion for so many things :
- His life in Baglan, the Western Mail, his grammar school in Port Talbot, Welsh and British and world Politics, his family, Aberavon RFC, Welsh history, Plaid Cymru, the Welsh Language, Spanish, American Western Films, the Wales Rugby team, Tonypandy, the Eisteddfod, Welsh newspapers, National Flags, his dogs………
Even his insistence that every pencil should have its own eraser on top!!

And I learnt quite a lot about small town life and education in the Mid-West of the USA.

A man with a huge heart. We will all miss him terribly

But it was a delight and a privilege to have known him.
