MarionCOLLINSMarion Collins of Bacup Road, Cloughfold, passed away at Pendleside Hospice on 31 October aged 79 years, following a short illness.

Born in Tottington, Marion came to Rossendale in 1966 as the first female police officer to be stationed at Bacup. She left the force in 1968 to marry and start a family. In later years, she worked for various footwear and textile companies in the valley and beyond, including Bacup Shoe and Hoyle Butterworth.

Marion was a creative and prolific knitter, crocheter and seamstress. She was easily recognisable about town by her colourful cardigans and hats, many of which she designed and made herself. She ran a keep fit group for many years in Stacksteads, and was a proud blood donor of more than 50 pints until an MS diagnosis forced her to stop.

In retirement she took up African drumming and clog dancing as well as joining a local 'knit and natter' group. She crocheted children's caterpillar toys and Christmas decorations for Macmillan Cancer Support. Small children who encountered her on the bus or in a café would be offered a colourful caterpillar to slip into their pocket.

Marion was a kind, warm and sharp-witted woman who will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She is survived by her daughter Jackie, son Jon, daughter-in-law Lisa, sisters Anne and Jean, four grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and nephews and nieces.

At her request, there won't be a formal funeral, though there will be a celebration of her life for family and friends from 2pm on Friday 21 November at Nellie's Café in Bacup.

Staying true to her thrifty and nature-loving values, Marion will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at a woodland burial ground close to the area where she was born and grew up. She requested that donations be made to Pendleside Hospice in lieu of flowers, either at the Celebration of Life event or online at www.pendleside.org.uk/donate-to-us.

I will always appreciate the warmth and kindness that Marion showed me from the age of around 11, welcoming me into her family as Jon's friend. She put up with me and Jon playing very loud music, guitars and singing (or trying to haha) all the way through our teens and into our twenties. I have nothing but lovely memories of her and will always be grateful to her.

Am so going to miss you Marion. I've been thinking back on all those adventures together as kids, growing up as youngsters in Tottington, alongside big sister Anne and mum and dad! And as you grew up I always respected your love of family and nature. I also need to thank you for being a good aunty to Andrew and Diane, and sister-in-law to Ian. Rest in peace dear sister. Love, Jean

Marion was an integral part of our knit and natter group and she looked forward to our weekly Wednesday lunch meetings at Nellie's Cafe in Bacup. We've put together our word cloud of some of the things that remind us of our much loved friend.
Glasses of water, brightly coloured knitting, clog dancing, amaryllis, shopping trolley, family, orchids, brave, Kevin the carrot, quirky humour, caterpillars, tuna sandwich, squircles, lemon drizzle cake, sunflowers, nettles, passionfruit curd, cats, snowmen, stinking tutsan, witty, bus pass, Father Christmas, crocheting whizz, coach trips to Llandudno, washing lines, good friend.
Greatly missed by us all

Will miss you (Aunty) Marion. Thinking back on all those great family events over the years, and will always remember our regular coach trips up to Bury where we'd meet up and have a good family lunch and catch up, and we'd usually follow that up with a stroll round the market. Good memories! Rest in peace Marion, love, Andrew (nephew).

She will be missed. Always a great supporter of my endeavours, Events in Haslingdon Accrington, and Bacup where we had a drum circle of over 40!!

What times we had drumming, clogging together at events.

I never knew how she regail me to here son and daughter, but deep down she loved it and we loved the sharp interaction, and everything she brought to the circle, including the Jazzy Knitwear.
