A great man. Spent many an afternoon in his bookshop with my dad, so much so he got a settee put in there for us! I found his and my father debating which was more progressive, the French revolution or the Russian revolution, highly amusing. My dad would come home with a feminist book & say "I picked this book up at Claudes bookshop" & I'd inspect it, if I said, "oh that's fabulous thank you" he say, "yeah I thought you'd like it" but if I said, "Oh no I don't like that kind of feminism" he'd say "no, no, it was Claude who thought you'd like it" so if I popped in to Claudes with it and asked, "Claude, did you suggest this book for me?" Claude would say, "erm, well, what do you think of it?" And if I said, "It's awful" he say, "It was all your dad's idea, he thought you'd like it" but if I said, "Oh it's a great book, very important issues in it" Claude would say, "Yes I thought you'd like it that's why I put it aside for you and told your dad." Both great men, Claude and his bookshop will remain in my heart for the rest of my life.
