Mary VirginiaBELL(née O'Connell) It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mary on Monday 16th February 2026 at the age of 87 years. A devoted wife, loving mother, cherished grandmother, and respected teacher. Mary was the beloved wife of her late husband, Ian, with whom she shared a life built on love, partnership and family. She was a proud and dedicated mother to her three sons, Chris, Jon and Martin, who were the centre of her world. She was also a much-loved grandmother to her five treasured grandchildren, Paige, Martha, Olivia, Eve and Charlie, each of whom brought her immense joy and pride. Mary gave many years of dedicated service as a teacher at Bishop Ullathorne School, where she was deeply respected by colleagues and students alike. She was passionate about education and touched the lives of countless young people through her kindness, patience and unwavering commitment. Mary will be remembered for her warmth, strength, generosity of spirit and her deep love for her family. She leaves behind a legacy of compassion, wisdom and quiet dignity that will continue to inspire all who knew her. Reception into St. John Vianney RC Church will take place on Monday 6th April at 6.00pm. Requiem Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday 7th April at 12:30pm, followed by interment at St. Andrew's Churchyard. Mary will be deeply missed and forever remembered by her family and friends. May she rest in peace. A very caring and inspirational teacher. My best wishes to her sons and her grandchildren. I pray that she is united with her husband and all those she has loved and had gone before her.
God bless you Mrs Bell.

I had the great honour to have worked with Mary at Bishop Ullathorne in the early 1980’s, at the beginning of my teaching career. She was the most caring, supportive colleague in a school that had so many. There must be thousands of people who were blessed to have been taught, or like me, worked alongside her. May she rest in peace and let perpetual light shine upon her.

To Mary's family I send my most sincere sympathy. The beautifully worded announcement of her death says so much about this lovely lady and wonderful teacher. Mary gave superlative service to Bishop Ullathorne School and to Catholic Education in Coventry, part of the generation that made our local service one of the best in the country. Mary had a special way of working with pupils of all ages and abilities and treated everyone in a way which mirrored her strong Catholic faith. "Love one another" could have been her personal maxim. I was privileged to have been her colleague for ten years. Reunited with Ian, may she rest in the peace of Christ for all time. Tony Kiely, Former President of the Coventry Catholic Teachers' Association.
