Since meeting Martin at British Rail Property Board in 1973 we immediately became friends and our annual winter trips to Scotland began, and continued for the next 53 years. During the 70’s we explored Europe by train meeting new friends who have remained in touch ever since.
Having commuted together daily to and from London for 10 years it was an obvious and easy decision to choose Martin as my Best Man.
Moving to Hillingdon we often went to evensong at St George’s Windsor in the Moggie. The 80’s saw changes as he relocated to Somerset by close contact remained and as our children arrived he was Godfather and later a sponsor at their confirmation.
We visited the West Country regularly and he called me on all major events such as the day of his car accident in Spain, redundancy from Railtrack and the day that Adele took him in.
As a great friend we shared confidences and history, talked a lot, drank too much and laughed even more. Our last concert at Wigmore Hall was a composers competition, their arrangements being performed by Tenebrae which was right up our street!
I shall miss him terribly but have a thousand memories to recall and feel privileged to have had such an extraordinary friend for most of my adult life.
You’ll always be special Spot and what a wonderful partnership we enjoyed.
Love you, Eagle x

Martin was too young, too seemingly healthy, too loved and with too much still to give. I so appreciated my cycle rides with him during Covid - and of course all the singing. Lynne

Martin was a wonderful fellow member of Somerset Chamber Choir and always campaigned for high quality choral music. We sang in many concerts together, over many years. He was right at the heart of our glorious bass section and…of the SCC banter! A twinkle in his eye would usually signal forthcoming humour! I loved his dry wit, comic timing, and camaraderie. Serious man too, on the issues that really mattered. Most recently he sang alongside me in the tenors, where we competed in terms of volume, pronunciation, accuracy etc.; I received knowing looks when clearly one of us exceeded our merits! We exchanged many views: some fantastic life insights. Ironically we only shared lunch recently: I got to know Martin a little better: the extent of his choral pursuits, many travels, reminiscing too about people, pieces and pasties! We wish Adele and the family all manner of strength in the months ahead, and in the knowledge that we will continue to share the love that Martin brought to us and to choral music. We’ll miss you cheeky boy. RIP.
