I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of “Big D”, a man who played a huge part in my early musical life and a player who meant much to the Greenway Selectus Band and to many who had the privilege of making music alongside him.

When I first heard Dave play, I was a young cornet player in my teens, still dreaming of reaching the standard needed to join a contesting band. His sound was unforgettable — smooth as silk, full of warmth, and powerful enough to make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. He set the benchmark for what a principal cornet should be: reliable, musical, and a committed leader.

From the moment I joined the band, Dave encouraged me constantly. He pushed me to better myself, to practise harder and to believe I could achieve more. He never missed a trick, never let standards slip, and always led by example, right down to brushing his teeth before every contest! A ritual I will always remember with a smile.

Dave wasn’t just a great player; he was a constant presence. A steady hand. A true bandsman. And for me personally, he was an inspiration and did me the ultimate honour of playing at my wedding.

His sound, his spirit and the encouragement he gave to me and other younger players will remain part of the Greenway Band’s story forever.
