I first met Nigel when we both started work at Royal Doulton Burslem as Trainee Development Managers at the age of just 19 on Monday 1st December 1975.
He used to give me a lift to Stoke on Trent Polytechnic in College Road when we did afternoons on day release at the College in his old green mini.We used to go on the "D Road" from Porthill to Basford but had to come off at Basford as the road didnt go any further in those days!
Although I have not seen him for over 48 years I still remember him from those halcyon days.
RIP Nigel.

I hadn't seen Nigel for a long time - people drift apart - but I think the friends you grow up with have an effect on you that stays. Nigel had courage - at school he would often put us in peril by arguing with Sixth Formers twice our size but he wouldn't back down! We had our first associations with young ladies together, we rode mopeds and motorbikes together and our little group had various adventures. I remember a camping expedition when we forgot to waterproof the tent and woke up dyed bright blue!
We used to frequent Lena's cafe in Hanley and eat sausage rolls covered in ketchup but Nigel was more cultured than me. When we worked on Saturdays at Lewis's, he somehow managed to get into the posh department, selling men's clothing while I ended up on frozen chickens. When I knew him he had a thing about looking like Jason King and he would spend hours having his hair styled at Belfields. I was with him when we turned the corner by C & A and I had the satisfaction of seeing his expensive blow-wave disintegrate!
Nigel was certainly a character. He had a good sense of fun and I enjoyed our time together. When you're young you think you'll always know one another. I suppose that rarely happens but somehow knowing he was still around meant something to me. If there's a heaven he'll be up there doing smelly and explosive science experiments, playing with his air rifle, tearing around on his motorbike or listening to old Beatles records.
R.I.P. Nige.

Our dear neighbour, who made us smile by leaning over the fence to say hello to our two dachshunds, imparting your vast knowledge to us on every possible subject, like our very own oracle.

Though you are gone, the memory of your warm spirit and cheerful company will stay with us always.
Rest in peace, Nigel. You will be deeply missed. Hope you are chilling with a good gin.
Stef, Alex and Alfie xx
