What a special lady, Maria was, and like everyone who knew her, I am so saddened and upset that she has passed. What brave dignity she had for so long, and I know she has left an indelible mark on all who knew and loved her. She was such a central presence to family, and so warmly invited me into that circle for which I eternally thank her. We shared many happy, memorable day trips in the UK as well as across to Europe, and of course our fun times in Spain where we dressed up, did ‘come dine with me’ and all wore moustaches when immersing in the Mexican evening. Her and I had many a car journey on the Eurotunnel, where she was up front with me and chatting the whole way about all sorts of good family stories, so I had to get my Liverpool ear tuned in very quickly so as not to miss a bit. Family was so clearly what meant the world to her, and when you look at the photos across the years, she was at her happiest with her many brood were around her. I’m sure her determination and strength to fight the illness was because she didn’t want to let go of her family. She created a welcoming, loving home for everyone to just ‘pop by’. There was never any ceremony, just friendly chat and warmth and we enjoy sharing an occasional naughty Baileys or Limoncello. She was so clearly proud of every relative and never judged, just was always there for everyone, regardless. She had such admirable traits and has left a legacy of family who I know are grieving deeply for the loss of their Matriarch. I hope they can take your strength Maria to help them come to terms with the immense sense of loss without you, that will no doubt leave a hole forever, but you will always be in their hearts, and in mine. Sending you love in your new journey but know you are missed and always will be. Xxx
