Lizzie and I were so very fond of Sam. We got to know Sam and Connie in 1989 when we moved to Hessle with our two young children. Our house at 75 Eastgate is next to Beech Cottage and so we soon became good friends. We will always remember Sam for his woodworking & engineering projects - the front gates he constructed for us. Our children would love to pop around and see Sam and the dog and listen to his tales. One especially springs to mind. When Oliver starting to show an interest in fishing Sam would tell how, as a boy, he would use an old stick, some string and a paper clip to catch fish! In some ways I feel sure Sam had an influence on Oliver in matters of engineering and understanding of how things worked and could be fixed.
The Lucas family will always remember him as a kind, genteel man with stories to tell. After he and Connie moved to North Ferriby we didn't see as much of Sam & Connie but they always knew our door was open and on some occasions, when Connie had some shopping to do in Hessle or a doctors appointment, Sam would steal the moment and come for a cuppa and slice of cake.
Both he and Connie always took and interest in our children and grandchildren. A genuine man who will be missed Our thoughts go to all the family.
