Alison and I were colleagues of Wally in London 46 years ago and kept in touch ever since he and Ruth first returned to Gloucestershire in 1982.
We became very close friends and met up fairly regularly during these years until age and health made the frequency widen gradually.
We were of course very sad to know of Wally’s innings coming to an end at 91. I use the cricket metaphor deliberately.
During the years Chris shared an office with Wally (1980-82) he was aware that Wally was a keen and active sportsman, particularly football (in his National Service days) and cricket which continued to play locally in East Sheen (South London).
I became aware that Wally was more than just a local club player, he was an effective bowler who could bat too.
It was usual to enquire how his weekend game had gone each Monday morning. One Monday, perhaps in 1981, his response was “oh quite well thanks”. An understatement typical of Wally.
Probing further he had bowled well and got some wickets, but admitted he was quite pleased to have scored a hundred runs too.
We continue to remember Ruth and Wally fondly and smile as we remember his quiet understated ways; along with his horticultural skills and experience shared.
Much love to Alizon and Sarah and their families who were much loved by their parents/grandparents.
