The Last Time

There was a last time
for everything with you -
but I didn't know it then.

The last time you called,
the last time you laughed,
the last time I saw you in your chair
or heard you say my name
without knowing
I'd never hear it again.

It's strange how the end doesn't
announce itself.
It doesn't knock loudly -
just waits in silence
on the edge of an ordinary day,
until suddenly, you're gone.

And I'm left
holding all the last times
in my heart.
