I am extremely sad to read this news; John was a lovely man. I lived next door to him from 2013 to 2016. He had an accident one morning and I helped him by phoning 999 and a few days later John gave me a signed copy of his book and some Thornton’s chocolates to say thank you. I thought he was much younger than his age and I couldn’t believe that he had lived for over twenty years without his beloved wife. I have thought about him often and wondered if he was okay. He was the first Labour MP for Heywood and I hope that John is remembered for his greatness. Little did he know that at that time I was going through my own difficulties and John’s kind gesture will stick with me forever.

Sincere sympathies to John's family. I first contacted him through an interest in family history, and for many years afterwards he sent a beautiful hand-drawn card every Christmas --- he was a talented artist and draughtsman. Rest in Peace.
