Sheila AnneSTEINDied peacefully at her home in Uckfield, Sussex on the 26th of January 2022. Born on the 29th of March, 1936 as the eldest of three children to Charles and Patricia Fairfield. Sheila started her career with the Inland Revenue where she met her future husband, Alan whilst having a row over his tax returns. She won the argument, and they were married in 1959. Sheila and Alan lived in Annan, Dumfriesshire where they had a daughter Fiona and a son Alan. Sheila was involved in several businesses in Annan and served on the Town Council including a term as Provost. In the 1970's the family moved to Glasgow and Sheila started her twenty-two-year association with the Potato Marketing Board where she was Head of Publicity for Scotland. Known by many as "The Tattie Lady" she travelled widely across Scotland and Northern England promoting the use of British potatoes. Sheila thrived on the creative side of her role and wrote and contributed to several popular cookery books. After retiring from the Potato Marketing Board in 1993 she spent many happy years tending her garden and travelling with her good friend Margaret. In 2005 she moved to Millington Court, Uckfield where she became heavily involved in her local community. In late 2021 Sheila was diagnosed with a recurrence of pancreatic cancer which she had first suffered in 1998. Sheila is survived by her daughter Fiona, her son Alan and her grandchildren Hamish, Maisie and Rhori. She will be missed and fondly remembered by many and always loved by her family. Her funeral service will take place on Tuesday 15th February at Kent and Sussex Crematorium, at 10.00am. Family flowers only please. Donations if desired, can be made in her memory in aid of St Wilfred's Hospice or Marie Curie and sent to Paul Bysouth Funeral Directors, 9 Croft Road, Crowborough, East Sussex, TN6 1DL

I’m sorry I have come so late to this but I’ve just found it.
Sheila Stein was a family friend to me and my late mother Jean Mair.
The Stein family moved in across the road from us in Berryhill Drive, Giffnock (Glasgow) around 1972. Alan and I were about the same age and become firm pals – we went to primary school together. I was always in and around the Stein home – I can remember the smell of hsh browns and whilst we drank tea, they drank coffee. Once Mrs Stein washed my school trousers for me when I came in covered in mud from the burn – I was too scared to go home (my mother never knew…)
Of course people move on but Sheila kept in touch with my Mum by letter and on the phone. When my Dad died in 2006 I got a phone call out of the blue: She opened with: “Do you know who this is?” – of course I knew even though we hadn’t spoken for 25 years. She offered kind words of wisdom – much appreciated.
Of my parents’ generation of friends and neighbours she was one of my favourites.
Sorely missed.
My sincere condolences to Alan and Fiona.
