The family wishes to offer their grateful thanks to all the staff at Hayward House, for the wonderful care shown to David in his final weeks.

David was born in Essex in 1938, the eldest Son of Robert Morrison Mitchell, Wireless Operator RAF, of Carronshore, Stirlingshire and Elsie (nee Hopkinson) of Basford, Nottinghamshire.

He spent his early childhood mainly in Southern Rhodesia before returning to England in 1946. Settling in Nottingham the family lived firstly in Basford then at Hucknall.

Sadly he lost his Father in 1950 which made him the man of the house. He attended Peoples College at age 13, and on leaving education he spent two years working at Hucknall Colliery.

In 1957 he joined the RAF, becoming a mechanic. While in the RAF he married Eileen Cooper of Bulwell, who joined him at postings in Bedford, West Germany and finally at Syerston.

David left the RAF in 1969, moved to Bulwell and joined British Rail Research in Derby, where he spent 25 years before taking early retirement.

He enjoyed his Model Engineering, was a long time member of the NSMEE and the VRMES. He enjoyed walking, gardening and making things - he always had a project on the go.
