GwendolineJOHNSONMrs Gwendoline (Gwen) Johnson passed away peacefully in her own home, where she lived with her family, after a long and meaningful life, on Wednesday, August 10. Born in Jubbulpore, India on March 18, 1921 to Dorothy and Charles Cooper, who was stationed there as a regular soldier. She spent her early years in India along with her sister Doris and brother David, before moving to Bacup aged six. Her school years were spent at Mount School and later Central School, before she started work at age 14 in the shoe industry. She worked in various factories as a machinist, but her later years were at J.W.Johnsons. She enjoyed dancing and on one occasion met her future husband Ernie, who she went onto marry on July 17, 1948, and had a long and happy marriage for 57 years until Ernie passed away in 2005. Gwen was brought up in a Christian home and her faith was so important to her; she was baptised in 1955 and in her later life was a member of Trinity Baptist Church. She was President of Rossendale Christian Endeavour twice and was also a Sunday school teacher, led prayer groups, and gave children’s addresses during Church services. In 1956 her daughter Barbara was born, followed by a much loved granddaughter Rachel, and then by great grandsons Kai and Mark. Gwen’s family has always been at the centre of her life and gave her much happiness. Gwen’s hobbies have been knitting and crochet, crosswords and word searches, as well as letter writing to those who needed kind words, also Bible study and her daily devotional readings. In 2021 Gwen reached the ripe old age of 100 and loved getting her letter from the Queen. Her funeral will be taking place on Wednesday, August 24 at 11am at Trinity Baptist Church, followed by cremation at Burnley Crematorium at 12.15pm. Family flowers only with kind donations in Gwen’s memory to Save the Children Fund and Rossendale Hospice. Funeral director: Anthony Johnson Funeral Services Ltd, Bacup.
