AlanGARVEYMr Alan Garvey sadly passed away on Monday, January 24, at Fern Hill Care Home, Bacup, aged 101. A service was due to be held at Central Methodist Church, Bacup on Thursday, February 3 at 2pm, followed by interment in Bacup cemetery at 2.45pm, conducted by Rev Derek Allen. Alan was born in Bacup on August 4, 1920 and had lived in the area all his life. He had lived at Fern Hill Care Home since August 2021 but previously had resided at Deerplay Rest Home in Weir for 11 years, before it closed its doors in 2021. He worked at Bacup Shoe from the age of 14 until he retired aged 61, having spent most of his time working as a “Clicker.” In his younger days, Alan was a member of the Central Methodist Church congregation in Bacup, but did spend some of his time as a Sunday school teacher at Thorn Chapel. Alan enjoyed his walking and followed sport; his interests were varied which covered cricket, football, snooker, crown green bowling and tennis, and in his youth he played in the cricket team for Thorn Chapel. Although he was 101 years old, up until his last few months he followed current affairs and was quite up to date with the world around him. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends. It is family flowers only, but donations in memory of Alan are being received for Cancer Research UK. Funeral director: Anthony Johnson Funeral Services Ltd, Bacup.
