A wonderful historian, writer, and highly respected human being who will be very sadly missed. John's support to my writing 'The Story of Parc Howard' and his invaluable editorial advice will forever be greatly appreciated. Always the perfect gentleman. RIP John.

Carwn ategu yr hyn a ddywedwyd eisoes. May I reiterate all the words which have been said about John. Although I have lived away from Llanelli for many years, I did have the opportunity from time to time to return, give the occasional WEA lecture and, above all, meet John and talk Llanelli history. In particular he and I studied and wrote about the history of the Llanelli Riots of 1911, in his case an excellent book on the subject. He was a master of knowledge about Llanelli and a fine interpreter of its history for a wide audience. He was also, in all my encounters with him, generous with advice and warm with friendship. He will be very sadly missed and I am sorry I now can't turn to him again and ask "John, can you tell me about the history of (whoever, whatever)?" and enjoy the answer. Bendith arnat , John, ac mae gennym gofiannau gwresog amdanat. Diolch am dy gymwynas enfawr !

John, my dear friend and mentor when I enrolled on a WEA creative writing course in 1988. Always supportive, inspiring others to research and write on local history. Revered President Emeritus of the Llanelli Writers' Circle.
I shall miss you. Rest in peace dear John. My deepest sympathy to all of John's family. Carole Ann Smith
