I will always have fond memories of John Dover despite becoming estranged for nigh on 50 years, and I'm truly saddened to learn of his passing.

His influence took many forms and came mostly from his personal advice on such things as the correct way to hold a golf club, to his fascinating anecdotes and related experiences working on the latest RAF front-line aircraft, to repairing our own cars, which was just about the only way we could afford to run them back then.

Lots of light hearted moments too. I'll never forget the message he left on the windscreen of a vehicle at Warwick University whose driver had parked so badly, he had all-but hemmed me in. With John's help, my own car was duly extricated, but the errant driver sure knew of John's displeasure.

John also once worked in the R and D at Jaguar cars in Coventry before pursuing a career in academia. I trust he'd approve of the car I presently have. It's regrettable that we never got the chance to discuss the marque in depth, along with many other matters of common interest.

RIP John Dover
