TonyDICKSONIt is with deep sadness that the family of Tony Dickson announce his death on 12th April, at the age of 76. Tony died peacefully at Dene Grange Care home in Hexham.

Tony was a well known, much respected local academic and enterprising business man who will be remembered by many for his major contribution in the 1990's as Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic to the development of Northumbria University into an institution with national and international recognition.

A social scientist by background, Tony became an extremely knowledgeable and learned man, whose intellect was second to none. He was regarded throughout the higher education sector as an innovator and creative leader, and a senior colleague described him as the brightest person he ever met. He could hold his own in anyone's company, including with leading politicians, local government leaders and captains of industry. He was sought out for his advice and guidance.

Tony was decisive and consistent, and an inspiration to those who worked for him and with him. He took pride in developing talented staff and mentored and motivated them to achieve their potential. He was constantly on the go and always wanted to move at pace, making swift decisions and actioning them, he was totally his own man throughout his career.

On leaving Northumbria in 2006 he took up the prestigious role of President of Raffles University in Singapore, and when he returned to the North East he ran his own specialist consultancy.

Tony was a kind and generous man. He was married to Jean for 54 years, and as a true family man he loved both his daughters and his young grandson. He loved sport with his lifelong passion being supporting Manchester City, so it was extra special that he got to enjoy their recent successes.

Tony suffered with Parkinson's for a number of years, and latterly he had dementia. He was bedridden for the last few months of his life and passed away peacefully in a Nursing Home in Hexham with his beloved Jean at his bedside.

There will be a family only cremation for Tony at Mountsett Crematorium on 29 April followed by a celebration of his life at The Angel of Corbridge at 12.30, which is open to all.
