MalcolmBUCKLEYMr Malcolm Buckley, who has died aged 88, spent his whole life in Stacksteads and was uniquely knowledgeable about Bacup and district. His parents Norman and Clara had opened a menswear shop on Newchurch Road, Stacksteads in 1929 and after education at Western School and BRGS, and National Service in Malta, Malcolm joined his father in the family business and eventually took over as manager. For over 50 years Buckley’s Menswear was a local institution, not least for the many children who went there for school uniforms. After the shop closed in 1985 Malcolm continued in retail menswear, working for Greenwoods and later for Novak’s. A Baptist by birth and conviction, his own commitment was expressed through Waterbarn Baptist Church where (until its closure in 2010) he was for many years a Deacon and Trustee. In retirement he became a local preacher in which capacity he conducted many funerals. Through his business he was active in the Chamber of Trade in Bacup and later Rossendale. He was a former President of Bacup Rotary Club; a member of Rossendale Probus Club; a member of Stacksteads Countryside Park Group and Bacup NAT. His wide interests included theology, history, culture and music – he had enjoyed choral singing and was a keen supporter of the Halle Orchestra. He is survived by his wife Hilda, children Peter and Lydia, daughter-in-law Michelle, step-daughters Heather and Louise, and her husband Stuart; grandchildren Ben, Holly, Grace, Jemma, Hannah, and Hayley, and five great-grandchildren. The Service of Thanksgiving for his life, led by the Revd. Daniel Burton, will take place at Holy Trinity, Tunstead on Monday, July 26, at 12.15pm after a private cremation at Burnley. Family flowers only. Donations to Bacup Rotary Club and the Stacksteads Countryside Park Group via funeral director Paul Swarbrick for Knight and Boys Funeral Service, 300 Newchurch Road, Stacksteads, Bacup.
