Teachers are not made, they're born. Good ones have an inherent gift for communicating and being interesting. They can hold a pupil's attention by their mere presence alone, and their wisdom stays with us for ever - so it was with Ron Scotton.
I recall some 50 years ago, turning out in cold, dismal conditions to run cross-country races for a man for whom I had great respect. Some 10 years later, we were to talk of old times in the Kiwi Inn as our voices became steadily slurred over a glass or two. I would love to have told Ron what I'm up to these days, mixing with 'A' list politicians on both sides of the Atlantic. It would have been a fitting tribute that his positive influences had been put to good use. RIP Ron Scotton.
