VernonMILLSVernon passed away peacefully on August 30, 2018 in Sunnyside, Washington, survived by his wife Esther, daughters Diane (Bill) Chow and Caroline (David) Wilson, grandchildren Zoe, Joshua and Susan (Kyle) Johnson and great granddaughters Adelyn, Channing and Logan. Born August 16, 1931 in Shaw, Lancashire, Vernon was the only child of the late Harold and Sarah Mills. As a young boy Vernon was an active Scout and in his teenage years reached the high honour of Queen Scout, an accomplishment he remained proud of his whole life. After completing his Motor Mechanic apprenticeship at Seddon Motors, he fulfilled his National Service in the RAF as a Motor Mechanic. Vernon and Esther married in Newhey in 1954, and over the next few years brought two daughters into their family and settled in Whitworth. A successful Motor Mechanic, he spent many years at the Gas Board and Wilkinson's Transport before deciding to change careers. Vernon joined the Royal Mail in 1973, and thoroughly enjoyed walking the streets of various Rochdale boroughs until being promoted to Postman Higher Grade and working inside the Rochdale Post Office. His Postman hours allowed him to pursue his love of model airplanes which he built from kits. After retiring in 1995 he and Esther spent their time traveling in the US, Europe and South America, the most memorable trip was the train journey across America with dear friends to celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary. In 2012 they moved to the States to be closer to their family in Washington State and California, splitting their time in each place. Vernon will be remembered as a warm, compassionate, non-judgemental, open minded and fun person. He was a doting husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. A Celebration of Life will be held in Spring 2019 in Whitworth. Send condolences to Esther at Just Like Home, 906 North Avenue, Sunnyside, WA 98944.
