JackLUCASPassed away peacefully on Monday 18th May 2026 at Prince Charles Hospital, Merthyr Tydfil.
Jack, lately of Gwaelod y Garth, Merthyr Tydfil was born in Wolverhampton in 1937 to Jack and Elsie. After an impressive school sports career in high jump, running and cricket he went to university in Hull and then qualified as a Teacher. He first taught at Lichfield Rd school in W'ton.
He married Josphine Taylor in 1959 and had two daughters Kate and Nicola. After renovating The Cottage themselves, they set up a plant nursery and later managed this smallholding near Wolverhampton until 1984 when the Coalboard came to opencast. From then until 2000 they lived on a smallholding near Whitchurch, Shropshire. Jack took early retirement from teaching French, Maths and Humanities at Landywood middle school in 1992. During this time Jack became a grandfather to four grandchildren, Greg, Lucy, Bryony and Lowri. When Jo died in 2000, Jack went to stay in Dorset for a few years.
In 2003 Jack moved to Southend on Sea where he married Janet Parker, a family friend and acquired three grown up stepsons, Gareth, Jeremy and Anton. There he was an active member of the community and travelled the world with Janet. When Janet died in 2011 he moved to Tumble in Carmarthenshire, where he took up golf and bowls. He later developed Dementia and moved to live with his friend Daria in Merthyr Tydfil.
Jack loved the outdoors and in his younger days was a keen cyclist being part of the Penn Rockets. He enjoyed gardening, walking, Ornithology, Lepidoptery, photography and fossil hunting.
Jack was skilled at lathe woodworking and being practical was often called upon to construct sheds and fences and mend machinery on the smallholdings. Jack was always enthusiastic about life, patient and had a dry sense of humour.
Jack was much loved and will be greatly missed by all those that knew him.
As per his wishes the funeral will be strictly private.
Donations in memory of Jack will be gratefully received towards the Alzheimer's Society. c/o IC & SM Davies Funeral Directors, Britannia House, Llandovery, SA20 0DD. Tel. 01550 720636
