Dr Colin WynneJONESOf Belmont Road, Bangor passed away suddenly on Thursday 16th of October 2025, aged only 70 years. He is survived by his beloved wife Jayne Jones and his two daughters Dr Katherine Jones, 28 and Eirian Jones, 25, as well as his older sister, Valerie Jones.

Born in Bangor, he spent his youth enjoying the company of his parents Vera and Albert Jones. Often regarded as some of the best years of his life, he spent his early childhood in Ysgol Cae Top followed by secondary education in Friars Grammar School. He studied electronic engineering at Bangor University, before completing a PhD in control systems.

In 1982, Colin moved to London to begin an extraordinary career with the BBC. Starting as a FACS engineer, he rose through the ranks as a sound recordist and news cameraman. His work took him across the world-reporting from Russia, Somalia, the United States, and the Middle East during both Gulf Wars to name a few. He documented the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Bosnian War, countless domestic political campaigns, and even toured with Bon Jovi. Among many memorable moments, he once shook hands with Saddam Hussein. Throughout these events, he was known for being resourceful, kind and cheerful with a can-do attitude - also enjoying mentoring other colleagues to success. He was among the fortunate few who could truly say he loved his work.

Outside of his professional life, Colin was a devoted husband and father. He shared his passion for travel and discovery with his family, taking them on countless adventures across Europe, North America, Scandinavia, and especially Canada. One of his most treasured memories was a recent trip of a lifetime to Australia with Jayne.

Following his retirement in 2016, he returned to his home in Bangor to spend his time with his family, who he loved dearly. He spent his time shooting at the local range where he was Club Secretary, as well as birdwatching and walking the coastal paths of North Wales with his daughters. At home in Belmont Road, he was a familiar, friendly face - often found tending his garden and chatting with neighbours. Colin will be remembered for his unwavering love, his thoughtful guidance, and his gentle, generous nature. His steady hand and wise counsel saw his family through difficult times and the advice he gave will continue to guide us. He was an incredibly proud husband, father, brother, and son.

A funeral service will take place on Monday 10th November 2025, at noon, at Bangor Crematorium, followed by a wake at the Carreg Bran hotel in Llanfair PG. Anyone who knew Colin and would like to pay their respects is encouraged to attend. Family flowers only. Donations in Colin's memory, in lieu of flowers, can be made to Snowdonia Donkeys, a charity that he loved.

I first worked with Dr Colin Jones in 1984 in SCAR at the BBC and again when I joined the Location Facilities team. He was a great colleague who was very proud of his Welsh roots and his family in Bangor. I enjoyed several UK trips with Colin. I recall driving with him overnight to Galashiels in Scotland to report on the resignation of David Steel as Liberal leader in March 1988. We set up our satellite dish in a school playground and Colin provided an impromptu science lesson to some of the pupils! Often when I met him at work, he would have a story or an anecdote which was passed on with a broad smile. He will be missed. RIP Dr Jones – gone too soon.

I first met Colin during my time at the BBC and if memory serves me right, it was right in the middle of a Police charge during a riot in London.

What struck me immediately was his calm, collected presence and warm, friendly manner. He was an absolute pleasure to work alongside, and with his support we were able to champion journalist safety and convince BBC leadership to commission the very first Hostile Environment Course.

Many news crews around the world owe their safety and indeed their life to Colin’s dedication and his determination to ensure that camera operators, sound crews and journalists received the protection they needed in dangerous environments.

I had the great privilege of seeing Colin and Jayne not long ago in my hometown of Sydney, and I cherished every moment. He had not lost his razor-sharp wit or his talent for gently taking the mickey out of world leaders a trademark humour I’ll always remember.

I will deeply miss this loveable, cheeky chap. Wishing him fair winds on his next heavenly assignment, and sending all our love to Jayne, Katherine, Eirian, and his sister Valerie.

I met Colin from the time he joined the BBC News department as a young DE engineer. Whenever our paths crossed, we had a natter. I had noticed he was a pleasant person, determined and ambitious person. Through his own talent he joined the Facs unit and from there to be sound recordist even though as per the BBC ENG agreement, his post was ENG cameraman when he worked with many different cameramen including Brian Hulls in Bosnia in very difficult situations and conditions. He went forward to become a Senior ENG cameraman and to a new job title, Senior Broadcast Journalist before a decade of managerial work.
I enjoyed working with Colin, especially in Romania. I talked much about our working life in my book, The Private Diary of a BBC News Cameraman. So, Colin got his name into print too. What an achievement in his life. Sadly left us all too early without a goodbye. RIP Colin and Om Shanthi (in my Indian culture).

I worked with Colin at the BBC and I'm so sorry to hear he is no longer with us. He was a very special person, as everyone says; Kind, patient, professional and always a pleasure to be in his company. Life on the road working for BBC News was often stressful and if Colin was on the trip with you he always made life easier. A very special person.

Condolences to his family
