I knew Roger a long long time ago, back in the late 70s, when we both worked in the Civil Service. I directed him in a couple of amateur dramatic production, one of which won a competition run by then HTV and actually made it onto television! He was characteristically hilarious, without quite realising it. He was a trade union activist then, as was I, and I recall a march through the middle of Bristol with the marchers chanting “Thatcher Out!” while Roger, just to be perverse, tried to start a chant of “Ho, Ho, Ho Chi Min!” We lost touch in the 1980s and although we both went into academia, our paths never crossed again. Sad to find out, via a random bit of googling, that he is no longer with us. He was a good mate.
