ThomasCROOKSTONMr Tommy Crookston, of Accrington, died on Monday, February 28, suddenly, aged 95. Tommy was born in Airdrie, Scotland in 1926 to Thomas and Mary. He was one of 10 children and had a really happy childhood, especially time spent with his siblings. When he left school he worked in a chemical plant until he was called up by the British Army to fight in World War 2. He was injured in Europe and spent a period of time recovering from these injuries after being flown home. He then started working again and met Catherine and began to raise the family. In the early 1960s they moved from the Coatbridge/Airdrie area to Blairgowrie, which is near Dundee. In 1969 they decided to move to Accrington as there was a shortage of jobs in Blairgowrie, and Tommy got a job at Mullards in Simonstone. He spent a few years there then Platts, Duralay, and many years until retirement at Blyths Chemicals. Tommy supported Celtic and followed them home and away through the 1950s and 1960s, then followed Burnley FC home and away until into his 80s. He also loved playing dominoes for Bold Street and Stanley Street WMC’s, and crown green bowling for Peel Park. He had a hectic social life for many years and had lots of friends to share a pint with. He had a season ticket for Burnley FC with his son Thomas and granddaughters Nicola and Leanne, and spent many a Saturday afternoon watching the match either at home or away. They also spent lots of time together going out and going on holidays and visiting family. His main love was his family and they will miss him dearly, especially all the brilliant stories that he had to tell from throughout his long and eventful life. He leaves behind children Bridie, John, Ann, Frankie, Eddie and Thomas, daughters-in-law Janet and Mhairi, sons-in-law Danny and Chris, grandchildren Nicola, Leanne, Brian, Gary, Michele, Delia, Tony, Angela, Debbie and Sharon, and great-grandchildren Logan, Ronnie and Mila. The funeral service, a Requiem Mass, will take place on Friday, March 25, at 10.15am at St Joseph RC Church on Belgarth Road, Accrington, led by Fr Francis Wadsworth, then a burial at Accrington Cemetery on Burnley Road at 11.30am, followed by a celebration of Tommy’s life at the Peel Park pub at 12noon. Everyone is welcome. Family flowers only and any donations are for the MacMillan cancer charity c/o funeral director Hyndburn Funeral Services, Accrington.
