Joyce MargaretWILSONIn Loving Memory of Joyce Margaret Wilson

Joyce passed away on the 23rd of October, at the age of 84, with her daughter by her side.

Born in Hayes, Middlesex and raised on the island of Guernsey, Joyce spent her childhood summers exploring the beaches and coves that shaped her lifelong love of the sea and the natural world. She was Head Girl at her grammar school - an early sign of her intelligence, determination, and quiet leadership. In a time when few women left the island for higher education, Joyce charted her own course. She studied Home Economics in London, graduating to teach in the city. She was a pioneer in her day - independent, ambitious, and compassionate - and carried those qualities into every part of her life. After graduating, she married David Wilson, and to the surprise of her in-laws, continued to work. Teaching underprivileged girls, Joyce gave not only lessons, but confidence and care. Her generosity toward others was a constant thread throughout her life. At the age of twenty-five, Joyce chose to devote herself fully to her home and family, dedicating the next twenty-five years to being an extraordinary mother to Nicola and Adrian. Even as a homemaker, her boundless creativity and curiosity and love of the garden never dimmed. She painted, sewed, crafted, and filled her home with the tools and evidence of her many gifts. When her children left home, Joyce felt the call for change once again. Never one to be confined by convention, she separated from David and embraced the next chapter of her life with characteristic courage and independence. She continued her passion in horticulture, the earth and garden answering the creative spirit that had guided her through so many other callings. She relocated to Cornwall, returning to the coast where her heart had always belonged. There, among the fields and sea air, she rediscovered her rural roots - making scrumpy, jams, and pickles with her daughter and friends, cultivating both her garden and her community. Even as the years advanced, Joyce refused to yield to age. In the final weeks of her life, she was still harvesting vegetables and pushing a wheelbarrow full of apples - a testament to her vitality, her independence, and her unbreakable connection to the land she loved. Joyce's thirst for life, her compassion, and her unbridled love for her children and friends will remain forever in our hearts and memories. She lived with grace, courage, and generosity - an island girl whose spirit, like the tide, could never be contained.
