Yolande DeborahPOWELLIn Loving Memory of a Life Well Lived - Yolande Deborah Powell

It is with deep love and gratitude that we announce the passing of Yolande (Yola) Deborah Powell, who departed this life peacefully with family by her side on Thursday, 8th May, 2025 at the remarkable age of 106. Her last breath was perfectly timed on the 80th anniversary of VE Day celebrations during the live prayers at Westminster Abbey.

Born in Sturton Street February 26, 1919, Cambridge, England, the year after WWI ended, Yola witnessed more than a century of change, growth, and progress. Throughout world wars, turmoil, and the digital age, she endured and was a constant steady beacon of wisdom, kindness, and strength. She worked in a role typically held by men who were sent to war, managed rations during wartime, raised children while her husband, Eric, was away in the army while maintaining a marriage that ultimately lasted 75 years.

A wife to the late Eric C. Powell, beloved mother to Mike and Lynda, grandmother to Lea, Sasha, Sandor, and Piri, great-grandmother to Ben, Michael, Casper, Ella-Malou, and Albin and a cherished relative and friend to many, Yola lived her life with grace, resilience and a wry sense of humour. She was known for her generous heart, her vivacious spirit, and the wisdom she shared with those fortunate enough to know her. She had a gift for speaking her mind whether you wanted to hear it or not, and a deep appreciation for the simple joys of life-sunny afternoons in the back garden, a nicely brewed cup of tea/coffee, the laughter of family and friends during visits, and her faithful customary 5pm nips of sherry.

Throughout her long life, Yola travelled the world with Eric and experienced many adventures including living in New Zealand for four years and later visiting family in America. In her retirement years, she was a member of the Cambridge Rambling Club where their breakaway group tramped down the footpaths across the UK and Europe.

She certainly touched countless lives in many ways. Whether through her community involvement, her unwavering support of her family, or her gentle words of encouragement, she left an indelible mark on all who knew her.

A celebration of her extraordinary life will be held at Arbury Road Baptist Church, Cambridge, on July 18th at noon, where family and friends are invited to gather, share memories, and honor the enduring spirit and strength of a remarkable woman. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

In lieu of flowers and cards, the family asks that donations be made in her memory directly to CamSight, 167 Green End Rd, Chesterton, Cambridge CB4 1RW continuing her lifelong commitment to helping others and where she was a member, or CamSight online www.camsight.org.uk/donate-to-cam-sight.

I will miss the chats about our family and the laughs we had.
You were so like my mum, Winnie, that I often forgot you were a different person. Loved you so much.
