Chris came as a history teacher to Sir Frederic Osborn School in Welwyn Garden City when I worked there as head of history. We became partners and pioneers in developing new teaching methods, especially History Games that involved recreating the past in the classroom and challenging students to explore historical problems. Chris was a great teacher with a strong commitment to young people and the cause of comprehensive education. He carried this forward as Deputy Head at Queen Elizabeth School, Crediton. Geographical distance meant that we met seldom in the years afterwards but I knew that he lost his wife Val (also an excellent teacher at Sir Fred's) and suffered serious ill-health himself in recent times. I have only just discovered this obituary notice and mourn him with great sorrow. He was just so talented and hard-working but a good friend as well.
