Hugh IgnatiusBROGANFormerly of Gloucester, passed away peacefully on Sunday 3rd May 2026 at the age of 82. Born in Glasgow, Hugh spent most of his adult life in Gloucester, where he became known as a devoted family man, loyal friend and someone whose kindness and selflessness touched many lives. Beloved husband of the late Grace Brogan, much loved father of Geraldine and Kierin, dear father-in-law to Anushika and Jon, cherished grandfather to Eben, Manav, Shaan and Mia, and dear brother to Catherine, Mary Agnes and Auliver. In later life, Hugh also formed a close and loving bond with Monika and Andrea, whom he considered as daughters and welcomed as part of his family.

Hugh served with distinction in the Royal Navy for 22 years, retiring with the rank of Chief Petty Officer. Following his naval career, he worked as a trainer and in health and safety before dedicating his semi-retirement years to caring for elderly people in the community - a role perfectly suited to his compassionate nature. A keen photographer and enthusiastic traveller, Hugh approached life with quiet generosity and humility. He was deeply devoted to helping others and was known for always placing the needs of those he cared for before his own. Hugh passed away peacefully at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital surrounded by those he loved. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Requiem Mass will be held at midday on Wednesday 20th May at St Peter's Roman Catholic Church, London Road, Gloucester.

Family flowers only please. Donations in Hugh's memory are welcomed for The Stroke Association. May be left in the retiring collection or sent c/o

Hugh was without doubt one of nicest people we had the pleasure of knowing. His kindness, generosity and above all his infectious smile will always stay with us. We will fondly remember the numerous parties and family gatherings with Hugh just quietly documenting the event with his wonderful photography … selflessly ensuring everyone was captured and had everlasting memories to takeaway. If he caught your eye there would be a cheeky smile behind the camera. One of life’s good ones… we are privileged to have known him and really will miss him. May he be at peace. Much love and condolences to all his dear family from James, Anu, India and Sam xx
